German universities rely on Austrian professors

However, this phenomenon exists in the opposite direction as well. According to the knowledge scorecard of the universities, close to 400 German professors were appointed to positions at Austrian universities in 2010 alone.

The situation is somewhat different when it comes to the students. The biggest group of foreigners at German universities in 2014 was the Chinese, accounting for 28,231 students or a share of 13 percent. Austria was second with 9,305 students, comprising 4.3 percent of all foreign students, followed by Russia with 11,126 students or 5.1 percent and India (9,372 students, 4.3 percent). On balance, twelve percent of all students in Germany are not German nationals.

In turn, some 32,800 Germans were studying at Austrian universities and universities of applied sciences in 2014, corresponding to 36 percent of all foreign students in Austria.
