Highly efficient microreactors

Initial successes have already been achieved. Two facilities for the Scottish research center CMAC came on stream a short time ago, and another pharmaceutical facility was supplied to the Middle East. The plants are much smaller but no less productive. The company says it is negotiating contracts involving the production of several hundred tons of drugs.

The basis for the new approach is the application of so-called continuous flow chemistry in microreactors, in which the reactions no longer take place in a stirred tank but react with each other during the flow of the microchannels. Thanks to the combination with other special technologies and intensification tools, a “flow miniplant” arises in which every individual step along the process chain in the production of chemicals is optimized, says the chemist Benedikt Reichart.

Microinnova was founded in the Science Park in 2003 as a spin-off of the Graz University of Technology and works for global players such as Novartis and Roche.
