Escherichia coli (E. coli) are intestinal bacteria which can trigger diseases. The measurement devices enable the concentration of Escherichia coli bacteria in water to be analyzed in just 15 minutes, according to the company. Previous laboratory tests were only able to provide results in much longer periods of time i.e. up to 72 hours.
In its new analytical method, the young company focuses on measuring the metabolism of the bacteria i.e. the specific enzyme activity of the E. coli bacteria. A water sample is mixed with substances which can only be processed by E.coli enzymes. In this way the activity of the enzymes can be analyzed, and subsequently the number of existing bacteria in the water can be determined. Enzyme activity in water is already scientifically well founded. For this reason, the systems can be calibrated accordingly, which in turn makes exact results possible.
The company developed compact measuring devices on the basis of this principle. The measurements are done automatically, and can be controlled and monitored online. In turn, this enables a quick response to changes in the bacteria content, which increases safety and saves resources.
The "ColiMinder" device can be used in a variety of ways, the company says, for example in monitoring water or as an early warning system. In addition, the devices can help in selecting water sources for drinking water treatment, in determining the dosage of disinfectants or in monitoring bathwater and irrigation systems used in the food industry.
