According to Sabine Seidler, Rector of the Vienna University of Technology, 15 scientists and technicians are to be employed at the new facility from the very beginning, along with numerous experts from the companies involved in the project.
The factory is not designed to manufacture commercial products for the marketplace. Amongst other objectives, it plans “multi-variant series production“, Seidler says, in which customized prosthetics and cars adapted to individual needs are produced. In addition, the Vienna University of Technology and the companies aim to manufacture individualized 3D printers at the pilot plant. Such devices are considered to comprise a key technology for "Industry 4.0".
The pilot plant should expand further by 2017. The Vienna Business Agency plans a separate production hall for the pilot plant near its current site. Tenders for three additional pilot plants are to be advertised by this time.
