Atomic insights into 3D

Togeher with colleagues from the Jülich Research Center and the Federal Institute of Physics and Technology in Berlin, Peter Puschnig of the Institute for Physics at the University of Graz published the results of their experimental and theoretical research in the scientific journal "Nature Communications".

Puschnig and his colleagues are trying to record the orbitals and making them visible. With the help of photoelectron spectroscopy, a sample of a molecular layer on a silver surface is bombarded with photons from an ultraviolet source of light. The energetically excited electrons are released,. Thier angular and energy distributions enable the scientists to draw conclusions about the molecular orbitals.

For the first time orbitals could be recorded for larger, complex molecules. For this purpose, the researchers carried out the experiment with different energies i.e. different wavelengths of light. Recently the researchers were able to reconstruct the electron distribution of a complex molecule in 3D by using the data from the precisely calibrated flow of photos of the "Metrology Light Source“ of the Federal Institute of Physics and Technology in Berlin.

Testing the potential early detection of ovarian cancer

About 75 percent of the cases of extremely aggressive ovarian cancer (ovarian carcinoma) originally arise in the fallopian tube. Currently there are no possibilities to detect this at an early stage. A new catheter system developed by Viennese scientists could represent a new possibility to deal with this.
