Growth in Austria’s life sciences sector

The number of life sciences companies has climbed to 823 since 2012, comprising an increase of fourteen percent. Revenue has grown by almost eight percent or EUR 1.4 billion in this period, and the number of employees has risen by three percent or a total of 1,500. More than two-thirds of the people employed by biotech and pharmaceutical companies are involved in research and development. On balance, life sciences companies in Austria invested EUR 917 million last year.

In 2014 almost 20,000 employees were working at 55 research institutions (17 research facilities, thirteen universities of applied sciences and 25 non-university research institutes) focusing on the field of life sciences. More than half of them, or a total of 11,229, are involved in research. They have a budget of EUR 1.44 billion at their disposal, of which EUR 366 million represent third-party funding. There were close to 60,000 students and almost 8,000 graduates in the field of life sciences in Austria last year.
