Graz-based space institute involved in the new Jupiter mission

As the first major mission of the ESA program "Cosmic Vision 2015-2025", JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer) is expected to explore the outer solar system of Jupiter for a period of three years. The start is planned for 2022. Eight years later the space probe is scheduled to reach its destination, and observe the largest planet in our solar system as well as its moons Ganymed, Kallisto and Europa for three years, explained Werner Magnes, Deputy Director of the Institute for Space Research.

The mission will be equipped with a total of eleven scientific instruments. The experts in Graz are responsible for a special quantum interference magnetometer, which the magnetometer group at the institute is heading. The instrument from Graz will comprise part of a magnetic sensor system developed under the leadership of the Imperial College in London.

In particular, potential water deposits under the icy surface of the moons are to be explored. The Institute for Space Research is contributing the space-qualified electronics of the laser-based measurements of the magnetic field. The Graz University of Technology is developed the optical sensor technology of the magnetometer.

Testing the potential early detection of ovarian cancer

About 75 percent of the cases of extremely aggressive ovarian cancer (ovarian carcinoma) originally arise in the fallopian tube. Currently there are no possibilities to detect this at an early stage. A new catheter system developed by Viennese scientists could represent a new possibility to deal with this.
