From Bitpanda and BingX to WhiteBIT: Austria’s crypto ecosystem is booming
28. October 2026Austria is increasingly emerging as a European hub for digital assets. International crypto companies, new MiCA licences, strong banking partnerships and events such as Bluechip26 are strengthening the country’s position for the long term.
Austria is positioning itself as one of Europe’s leading locations for crypto, blockchain and FinTech companies. New investments, a growing number of international companies and increasing cooperation between banks and digital asset providers are strengthening Vienna’s position in particular as an emerging European hub for digital assets.
MiCA creates new location advantages
MiCA, the European Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, plays a key role in this development. Since its introduction in 2024, it has established a harmonised regulatory framework for crypto service providers within the European Union. Companies can apply for the relevant licence from national supervisory authorities, enabling them to offer their services across borders throughout the European Economic Area.
Austria has established itself as an attractive location for licensing Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASPs). According to KPMG, eleven companies headquartered in Austria held a corresponding CASP licence as of mid-October 2026. The scale of the market illustrates the location’s potential: around 6.7 million registered CASP users, crypto assets under custody worth more than EUR 4.4 billion and an annual transaction volume exceeding EUR 17 billion are making digital assets an increasingly important economic factor in Austria.
Vienna unicorn Bitpanda as an international magnet
With BitpandaBitpanda (), Austria has been home to one of Europe’s best-known FinTech companies since 2014. The Vienna-based unicorn has developed into a leading investment platform for digital assets and serves millions of users across Europe.
At the same time, its growing cooperation with Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) demonstrates how digital assets are increasingly becoming part of traditional financial services. RBI plans to make the crypto offering developed jointly with Bitpanda available through all of its subsidiary banks in Central and Eastern Europe. This could give customers in numerous countries direct access to crypto services through their own bank.
The Linz-based company Blockpit Blockpit ()also provides a platform for managing the tax aspects of cryptocurrencies and digital assets. It supports investors and tax advisors with the automated calculation of crypto taxes.
International crypto companies choose Austria
Austria has also developed a broad ecosystem of specialised companies. In October 2026, BingX became another major platform to obtain a MiCA licence from the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA). WhiteBITWhiteBIT (), one of Europe’s largest crypto exchanges and a partner of companies and organisations including Visa, FC Barcelona and Juventus Turin, received its licence in June 2026.
US-based provider of crypto and stablecoin payment solutions Cyclops Cyclops ()has also established its EU headquarters in Vienna. With plans to expand its Vienna team by the end of 2026, Cyclops underlines the confidence international FinTech companies are placing in Austria.
BybitBybit (), one of the world’s largest crypto exchanges, also sent a strong signal for the location when it opened its European headquarters in Vienna in 2025. The company already employs around 60 people there. Since then, Bybit has continued to expand its European presence and, in addition to its MiCA licence, has obtained an EMI licence (Electronic Money Institution Licence) for payment services.

Together with other international providers such as crypto exchange KuCoinKuCoin () and Swiss crypto bank AMINA, Bybit is further strengthening Vienna’s position as a growing European centre for digital assets and modern financial services.
Animoca Brands is another sign that Vienna is now on the radar of global crypto companies. The international Web3 investor is considered one of the industry’s major players and has named Vienna as a potential location for future activities.
