How SEW-EURODRIVE Is Driving Automation Forward in Austria
17. September 2026The global market leader in geared motors is further expanding its footprint in Austria: with a new competence center in Upper Austria and a modernized plant in Vienna, SEW-EURODRIVE is sending a clear signal of commitment to Austria as a production location.
German drive and automation specialist SEW-EURODRIVESEW-EURODRIVE () operates in 57 countries worldwide and has been active in Austria since 1969. In Austria, Slovenia and Croatia, the company employs 176 people at five sites and is continuing to expand its production, service, automation and customer-proximity capacities.
At its Vienna site, SEW-EURODRIVE has comprehensively modernized the existing Drive Technology Center: existing buildings and the production hall were refurbished, new office, training and meeting rooms were created, and production and service processes were made more efficient through digitally supported workflows.
In mid-September 2026, the company celebrated the modernized Vienna facility at an event attended by around 200 customers from Austria and Slovenia. Representatives of the Federal Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism (BMWET) and ABA also took part.
New Drive Technology Center in St. Florian
A key milestone in SEW-EURODRIVE's site development is the official groundbreaking in July 2026 in St. Florian, Upper Austria. This is where the company's new Drive Technology CenterDrive Technology Center () will be built, set to become the central point of contact for customers, partners and employees, as well as a competence center for industrial gearboxes, service, automation, and technical training and education.
The new site will focus in particular on service, assembly, industrial gear units, automation, and technical training and education, and is expected to create additional jobs from 2028 onward. Covering around 5,500 square meters, it will include modern office, service and assembly areas, while the Drive Academy and an application hall will open up new opportunities for hands-on training, system tests and application-oriented solutions.
With the new Drive Technology Center, SEW-EURODRIVE is expanding its presence in Austria's strong industrial central region and strengthening customer proximity. The site provides an important basis for meeting customer requirements reliably, flexibly and efficiently in the future.
SEW-EURODRIVE was supported in its site decision by ABA, Business Upper Austria and the Vienna Business Agency. For example, ABA helped SEW-EURODRIVE connect with local partners, supported project planning and submission, and provided coaching and advice on funding opportunities throughout the entire project phase.
Austria as a Location for Automated High-Mix Manufacturing
At its Austrian sites, SEW-EURODRIVE combines drive and automation technology with service, assembly and technical training and education. The modernized and newly emerging capacities in Vienna and St. Florian are intended to make processes more efficient, safeguard service quality and further strengthen customer proximity.
