IT startup "Bertaweb" wants to make Internet searches transparent

"A secure and transparent Internet is not only necessary – it is also possible“, said company founder Paul Ingram. His European startup Bertaweb has developed an open interface which can access its own mass storage facilities in Vienna and thus search the Web without being depending on Google and others. This would open up new opportunities for companies and software developers.

"Existing providers storage the Web themselves, and we are doing this in the same way as Google and others“, Ingram explained. A sophisticated system stores the fundamentally endless worlds of the World Wide Web in the Internet archive of Bertaweb, thus protecting it from outside access. In order to save storage space, the Websites stored in this network of central computers are filtered according to relevance and continually updated. Not only applications but also the data itself will be sold via access to the interface. This is similar to a utility company, which only offers electricity, but not the washing machine which operates using this electricity.

The company based in Vienna and Munich which will soon be launched on the market is opening its interface to the Internet archive in an initial step. In contrast to Web searches with established providers, this tool, which can be visualized as a kind of data base interface, should help make it clearly evident how the results lists of a search engine come into being. “With us one sees the results lists, as one does with Google, but one also sees why the number one Website is number one, how big the gap to the number two is, and what number three must do in order to become number one. All this can be determined”, Ingram stated.

Based on this, programmers can develop new types of search engines or further data mining applications. According to Ingram, the interface of Bertaweb also makes it possible to understand and reconstruct so-called PageRank algorithms underlying the search results of Google.

Storage and distribution for Eastern Europe is more economical from Vienna than from Prague or Budapest. Because shipping business between the individual reform nations is barely developed, whereas neary every Eastern destination is serviced from Vienna several times a week.
