Whereas many navigation systems make use of GPS and WLAN data, Hannes Kaufmann, Head of the Team for Interactive Media Systems at the Vienna University of Technology is taking a completely different approach. The live photo on the mobile phone camera is automatically examined for characteristic places and compared with a stored map of the building. In this way the position can be determined more precisely, and the app can determine in which direction the camera is looking at the moment, according to a press release issued by the university. In this way direction signs and helpful additional digital information can be displayed.
According to the Vienna University of Technology, the "Personal Indoor Assistant" has already been successfully tested at Vienna Airport. The software is the result of a joint project of the university with the Viennese company Card-emotion supported by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG. The start-up “Insider Navigation was established to realize the project, and important components of the new technology were patented. The aim of the company is to be able to go online serving the first customers by the end of the year.
