Viennese physicists tracking down "glueballs"

Anton Rebhan of the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the Vienna University of Technology together with his doctoral candidate Frederic Brünner have chosen a new approach and could thus come a step closer towards solving this puzzle. These new methods are actually derived from string theory, and are based on higher dimensional gravitation theory. “We do not imagine that our world is of a higher dimensional nature, but we use the mathematical aspect of string theory in order to describe the particles”, Rebhan said.

This approach enabled them to reproduce the decay pattern of the heavy particle with a high level of accuracy, thus making it a candidate for the long sought-after “glueball”. “Whether or not these calculations are correct could be proven in the coming months by experiments conducted at the Large Haldron Collider (LHC) at CERN and wsithin the context of a Chinese accelerator experiment.
