Lukoil transfers holding from Amsterdam to Vienna

The expansion of the company’s operations in Vienna already began back in 2014 with the 100% takeover of the former OMV lubricant production plant in the Lobau area by Lukoil Lubricants Austria. Now Lukoil Lubricants Austria is intensively investing in the expansion of the production site and its technological modernization. The core feature of the expansion drive is a swimming oil transfer station, construction of several storage tanks and the conversion of existing storage tanks into production tanks. Accordingly, these steps will not only more than double the existing capacity but also enable oil to be loaded onto ships or unloaded from them.

Vienna is an ideal location

The innovations in production operations serve as the basis for Lukoil to expand its “first fill” business i.e. to fill new motor vehicles with engine oil. Lukoil can supply this oil and wants to produce it in Austria in the future. Vienna as a production site is a particularly advantageous location for Lukoil for several reasons. For one thing, delivery by inland waterways saves 500 tons of CO₂ emissions in the first year alone. Moreover, the modern construction methods of the production facilities are subject to the highest environmental standards which cannot be matched by other European producers at the present time. The future possibility of direct transshipping from inland waterway vessels to railways makes Vienna a potential hub for Lukoil in Central and Western Europe. Construction work is officially expected to begin in February 2016.

Lukoil is convinced that it will achieve a quality and logistics advantage by having a modern production facility in the heart of Europe, and hopes this will make the company an initial supplier of first-fill lubricants for new cars produced by the European automobile industry.

In addition to its production sites in the Vienna Lobau area, the Group has strategic holdings in Germany, Finland, Romania, Bulgaria, Belarus, Ukraine, Turkey, Dubai, Kazakhstan and the USA via Lukoil Lubricants International Holding GmbH. Lukoil Lubricants International Group is the international lubricant division of the largest Russian oil company, generating total revenue of USD 834.7 million in 2014.
