Austrian researchers participate in developing an eye for the world’s largest telescope

In addition to scientists from Vienna, Innsbruck and Linz, partners from Germany, France, the Netherlands and Italy were involved in the "Multi-AO Imaging Camera for Deep Observations" (MICADO) project. The MICADO camera is being developed to enable a much more precise view of the universe than with conventional telescopes together with the E-ELT, located in the Atacama desert of Chile, which is being built over the next ten years by the European astronomical organization ESO (European Southern Observatory).

"This revolutionary telescope will be the largest optical or near-infrared telescope in the world, and collect about 15 times more light than the largest optical telescopes in use today“, says the astrophysicist Joao Alves of the University of Vienna, who serves as the Austrian project coordinator.

The start of planning on the second instrument which will arise with Austrian participation is scheduled for the near future. The universities of Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz and Linz are working on the construction of the "Mid-Infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph" (METIS) together with the Johann Radon Institute for Numerical and Applied Mathematics (Ricam) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Linz.
