A world first: disinfection with light

Employees in operating rooms or microelectronic producers have to wear special cleanroom clothing. This clothing has to be disinfected without residue before entering the cleanroom. Ornter Reinraumtechnik based in Carinthia developed a novel process for this purpose. It enables employees to disinfect employees and their clothing within a short time and in only one single process. Up until now the major challenge was to safely disinfect people wearing clothing without endangering them.

This quick disinfection is achieved in a natural way with the help of a special dye in the clothing and exposure to light. The process is called photodynamic disinfection. “Singlet oxygen”, which has more energy and is highly reactive, is used to destroy bacteria and viruses by using a source of light. The process was developed together with research partners, including the Graz University of Technology.
