Electricity instead of oil
"There is absolutely no doubt that our energy supply will change dramatically”, emphasizes Michael Stadler. Fossil fuels will become less important for climate protection reasons. Electricity will gain in importance, especially electricity from alternative sources such as photovoltaics or wind energy. People are considering different approaches as to how one can adapt our electricity networks to the new requirements. Stadler and his team mainly carry out research on so-called “microgrids”.

A microgrid is an electricity network with a rather manageable size. Perhaps it encompasses half of a city district, and includes both consumers and electricity suppliers. In the future, small regional electricity networks could operate independently of one another. Large, transregional power failures, for example those observed in the aftermath of environmental catastrophes, would become far less probable.
