Disproportionately high level of innovation of Austria’s automobile industry

©

Each working day 1.4 patent applications are submitted by Austria’s automotive industry. This represents a total of 348 patents annually. AVL List is the Austrian patent champion, followed by the Canadian-Austrian engine producer Magna.

In particular, automotive research in Austria makes a major contribution in the field of environmental technologies, especially when it comes to electromobility and lightweight construction. A patent application is submitted almost every week in the field of electric-powered vehicles, and the number is increasing. With respect to its population, Austria boasts the second highest per capita density of inventors, surpassed only by Germany.

Austria’s automotive sector accounts for 450,000 jobs, EUR 15 billion in taxes, gross value added of EUR 30 billion and revenue of EUR 43 billion.

Austria as a Trailblazer for the Circular Economy

For years the idea of the circular economy embodies the vision of an economy with controllable resource consumption. Pioneer work was carried out, for example, by the European Union with its “Circular Economy Package”. This creates the foundation for enabling (secondary) raw materials to remain in the economic cycle as long and efficiently as possible. This can be done if attention is paid to economical raw material use, durability and repairability and reusability at the beginning of the value chain, and that the materials can be optimally collected, sorted and recycled after their use.
