Austria already plays a leading role in quantum research. This can be seen by the high number of publications and quotations in renowned scientific journals on the part of the 26 research groups primarily located in Vienna and Innsbruck. “With the ESQ, we want to maintain and expand these existing strengths”, explained Markus Arndt, spokesman of the center and Professor for Quantum Physics at the University of Vienna.
The ESQ is funded and supported by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) in cooperation with the Universities of Vienna and Innsbruck and the Vienna University of Technology.
24 postdoc positions
Over a period of five years, 24 postdocs from other countries will be lured to work for domestic quantum research facilities for two years each. Promising Austrian physicists who previously worked abroad will also be given the opportunity to return to Austria.
About EUR 500,000 will be put at the disposal of scientists for innovative individual projects. About five to ten smaller projects could thus be funded each year.
