And recently, even the British music industry association (BPI) reported a sales increase of 53 percent for vinyl, to more than 3.2 million record albums - the highest level since 1991.
But manufacturing and sound quality have remained the same for decades. The Lower Austrian company, Rebeat, and the Graz research institute, Joanneum Research, have developed a process in which a laser cuts the blank record.
With "HD vinyl", the grooves can now be cut closer together, which allows for around 30 percent more information and 30 percent more basic volume in the same space. In addition, records can be produced more quickly with this new process.
Company searching for partners
Despite the good prospects on the market - CEO Günter Loibl thinks that a market share of up to 50 percent will be possible for "HD vinyl" in the next few years - and the boom in the entire market segment, the search for partners in Austria and internationally has been difficult. The biggest problem is finding a partner that will make possible a broad rollout of the format beyond company boundaries.
