
The government program stipulates the “rapid expansion of a modern, high-performance telecommunications infrastructure” aiming for the “nationwide supply of gigabyte connections in addition to nationwide installation of 5G”. By the year 2021, Austria should become a “model country for 5G”. All proceeds from auctioning frequencies will be used in the future to expand the digital infrastructure. An interministerial task force called “Digitalization” will be created to press ahead with the government’s digitalization plans. Margarete Schramböck, the new Federal Minister of Economy and Digitalization, was CEO of the telecommunications company A1 Telekom Austria until October 2017.
