More broadband and 5G for Austria

Minister Margarete Schramböck and President van der Bellen © APA/Roland Schlager

The government program stipulates the “rapid expansion of a modern, high-performance telecommunications infrastructure” aiming for the “nationwide supply of gigabyte connections in addition to nationwide installation of 5G”. By the year 2021, Austria should become a “model country for 5G”. All proceeds from auctioning frequencies will be used in the future to expand the digital infrastructure. An interministerial task force called “Digitalization” will be created to press ahead with the government’s digitalization plans. Margarete Schramböck, the new Federal Minister of Economy and Digitalization, was CEO of the telecommunications company A1 Telekom Austria until October 2017.

Austria as a Trailblazer for the Circular Economy

For years the idea of the circular economy embodies the vision of an economy with controllable resource consumption. Pioneer work was carried out, for example, by the European Union with its “Circular Economy Package”. This creates the foundation for enabling (secondary) raw materials to remain in the economic cycle as long and efficiently as possible. This can be done if attention is paid to economical raw material use, durability and repairability and reusability at the beginning of the value chain, and that the materials can be optimally collected, sorted and recycled after their use.
