Interdisciplinary research teams will cooperate in the Open Innovation Center (OIC) of the Linz Institute of Technology (LIT) in the future, including operating the Industry 4.0 pilot plant LIT Factory. Together with JKU, the Austrian federal real estate company BIG is investing about EUR 25.2 million to construct the Open Innovation Centers. It is scheduled to be put into operation in the spring of 2019.

The LIT Factory will work on new types of frontier technologies, in some cases prototypes, for example digital tools for systems engineering, plastics technology facilities and the linking of cyber-physical systems. A total of 25 employees will work on an area of about 2,000 square meters in the future. Annual production capacity is about 500 tons. Scientists of different institutes and faculties will join forces at LIT. They will pursue a sustainable approach known as “responsible technology”. The focus will not only be on technological innovations but also their conditions, effects and side effects.

The quiet automobile (r)evolution “Made in Austria”

Austria is an automotive stronghold. This may sound somewhat strange for some people. Doesn’t one always speak about Germany being an automotive powerhouse? This is true. However, Austria is not only an important production location but also a significant driver of innovation in the sector when it comes to research and development. This becomes particularly obvious within the context of the current automobile revolution.
