A recent study carried out by Phillip Nell, professor at the Vienna University of Economic and Business, in collaboration with the researcher Jan Schmitt of the university’s Institute for International Business with the support of Erste Bank Foundation, now shows that the number of headquarters relocating in Austria between the years 2000 and 2017 was more than double the comparable number which left the country. A total of 45 firms either transferred the head office of the parent company (in ten cases) or a specific division (35) to Austria whereas 20 left the country. In particular, the years following the financial crisis showed a high level of mobility. 65 percent of the exodus (13 out of 20 firms) and 67 percent of the new headquarters projects (30 out of 45) took place during this period.
