In 2018 Austrian startups were given about 25 percent more money in rounds of financing than in the prior year. The total amount of funding climbed from EUR 138 million to EUR 173 million. Accordingly, Austria is ranked 15th in European comparison. At the same time, the number of financing rounds increased, more than doubling from 35 to 71. Here Austria is also ranked 15th. The total value of startup financing in Europe rose to EUR 21.3 billion in 2018, comprising a year-on-year increase of eleven percent. The number of financing rounds also climbed by 15 percent to 4,199.

In May 2020, a team led by thoracic surgeon Konrad Hoetzenecker of the Department of Surgery of the Medical University of Vienna (MedUni Vienna) and Vienna General Hospital performed a lung transplant on a 44-year-old patient who had been seriously ill with COVID-19, making her the first patient in Europe to receive a lung transplant for this indication.
