It was developed by the Israeli startup Chakratec. The flywheel energy storage system enables the complete charging of an electric-powered vehicle within 20 minutes. The core components of the charging station, the "Kinetic Power Booster", consist of ten magnetic flywheel energy storage units, each of which weighs 250 kilogrammes and accelerates up to a speed of 18,000 revolutions per minute. The gyrating mass is slowed down in the discharging process. The kinetic energy is converted to electrical energy with the help of a generator. The project represents part of the climate protection strategy pursued by Vienna Airport. No scarce raw materials are needed to produce the storage system.
