The University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna was rated fifth in the field of veterinary medicine, the University of Vienna placed thirteenth in communication sciences and Montan University of Leoben was ranked 15th for metallurgy. On balance, Austrian universities appear 16 times in the current top 100 ranking.
The Shanghai Ranking, which has appeared annually since 2003, was developed by the Centre for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (CWCU) and has been published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy since the year 2009. The ranking consists of 500 universities around the world and is based on the total value of the composite research indicators (league table). This time the ranking compared 4,000 universities in 54 academic subjects. The University of Vienna managed to be included five times in the 100 best universities of a specific subject in the research-focused ranking, namely in the fields of communication sciences (rated 13th), mathematics (39th), atmospheric sciences and ecology (51st-75th) and political science (76th-100th).
