The competitiveness of Austria as a business location improved by three places last year. Austria is now rated 16th in the world in the current ranking of the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland comparing a total of 63 countries in the world. The productivity and motivation of employees as well as the efficiency of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are a particularly pronounced competitive advantage. According to the companies surveyed, the business location stands out because of the well- qualified skilled employees. Austria is in the top ranks with respect to the productivity of employees, efficient SMEs and its quality of life. Accordingly, the results of the survey mean that Austria has now outperformed Germany, which is rated 17th in the world, the same as last year. Singapore defended its leading position, followed by Denmark, which was ranked second, up from its 8th place rating last year. Switzerland is rated third in the world, one notch higher than in the previous year.
