Today this hub for cutting-edge research is considered one of the leading institutions in the world in its field. IST was created based on an idea by the Viennese experimental physicist Anton Zeilinger.
In 2018, the scientific journal "Nature" recognised IST Austria as one of the 30 up-and-coming research institutes founded over the past 30 years ("Rising Stars – 30 under 30"). IST is the only non-Asian institute to rank among the top ten. In 2019, the publication "Nature" rated IST Austria third in the global research ranking Nature Index. IST Austria has published more than 3,000 scientific publications up until now.
Today more than 860 people from 76 countries work at IST Austria, and 59 research groups carry out research in the fields of mathematics, information technology, physics, chemistry, neurosciences and biology. The 67 professors currently employed at the institute were selected from among 13,400 applicants. They lead research groups consisting of up to ten postdoctoral and PhD students. About 90 professors are expected to be working at IST Austria by the year 2026, with the total staff at the institute increasing to about 1,000 people.
