Benjamin Grössing and David Fankhauser sold their image editing company to the globally operating Australian design platform Canva. Through the sale, the company founders want to make visual AI accessible to as many people as possible. On the basis of this deal, Kaleido AI should be able to further accelerate its growth and the development of new visual AI products. The team in Vienna is expected to almost double in order to pursue this target. At present Kaleido AI employs a staff of about 25 people. Grössing and Fankhauser will remain on board as the managing directors. It was agreed not to disclose the purchase price, but sources suggested a double-digit million euro amount. The deal concluded between Kaleido AI and Canva was implemented in two tranches.
Kaleido has more than 20 million active users each month who enjoy the company's image and video editing tools "remove.bg" and "Unscreen". The backgrounds in images can be automatically removed in seconds by applying the product "remove.bg" launched in 2018. The tool is also being used by globally operating companies. Unscreen has been on the market since 2020 and makes it possible to remove people and objects in videos with only one clip.
