This is because they can continue to operate existing oil heating facilities, automobiles or aircraft in a climate-neutral manner. The production of these fuels will soon begin in Austria as well. For this reason, the eFuel Alliance Austria was founded in March to advocate the broad-based use of eFuels. This cross-sector group will mainly rely on technical innovations on the road to the energy turnaround.
The use of eFuels is just beginning in Austria. The reason for this is the joint project "Innovation Liquid Energy" between the Austrian Institute for Heating and Oil Technology (IWO) and AVL List GmbH.
Europe's most advanced power-to-liquid facility is to be constructed in Austria by the year 2022. It will serve to manufacture synthetic fuels for heating and transport generated within the context of the so-called power-to-liquid (PtX) process. The surplus electricity arising from hydropower and photovoltaic plants will be used to generate hydrogen on the basis of electrolysis. In turn, this will be mixed will carbon dioxide and chemically liquefied. Subsequently it will be further processed to produce climate-neutral heating oil, diesel, petrol and kerosene.
