The Upper Austrian city has been given this designation, just like Singapore, Moscow, Montevideo and more than 100 other cities across the globe. The certificate issued by the specialised agency International Telecommunication Union (ITU) of the United Nations Organisation along with its United for Smart Sustainable Cities Programme (U4SSC) was preceded by a comprehensive analysis process by experts at Triple-A Analytics. U4SSC is an initiative of the United Nations whose purpose is to achieve one of the 17 objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 - namely Goal 11 "Sustainable cities and communities". U4SSC is designed to serve as a global platform for the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in order to facilitate the transition to intelligent, sustainable cities.
The results show the extent to which Wels has integrated information and communication technologies into its public infrastructure. In this case, the city scores points, above all in the fields of economy and the environment.
