Special power electronics on 300-millmetre thin wafers will be manufactured in the future in a completely automated facility. They are energy-saving chips used in automobiles, household devices, smart phone and solar power systems. Up until now Infineon has produced a total of 8.5 billion chips annually at its Austrian plant, a figure expected to increase significantly in the future. Infineon is the world market leader for power semiconductors.
The new production plant has about 60,000 m² of floor space and is 35 metres high. The clean room itself features an area equivalent to one and a half soccer fields. Infineon employs a workforce in Austria of 4,600 people from 70 countries. 400 additional employees have been hired for maintenance and control as well as for research and development.
