Vienna University of Technology establishes a centre for AI and machine learning

For years, the university has been conducting intensive research in this field and with considerable success, but at different institutes and faculties. CAIML was founded with the purpose of strengthening and bundling these research activities.
AI and ML technologies have developed very dynamically over the past one to two decades. "However, what we have perceived is that various communities have emerged in the course of the last few decades which are not as closely linked as they should be," states Prof. Stefan Woltran of the Institute for Logic and Computation at the Vienna University of Technology. "We would like to now bring these different initiatives together."

The underlying objective is to strengthen this collaboration within the Vienna University of Technology on the basis of joint research initiatives, excellence programmes and educational measures and to press ahead with the university's internationalisation. "The Vienna University of Technology is already very well networked internationally in the field of computer sciences. We want to expand upon this and thus position the university within the international elite," Stefan Woltran adds. At the same time, the connection between basic and applied research should be further strengthened.
