New centre for cutting-edge research

The competence centre "GeoSphere Austria - Federal Institute for Geology, Geophysics, Climatology and Meteorology." In the future, it should collect important data for climate research and public services in the general interest. The new "GeoSphere Austria" competence centre bundles the Federal Geological Institute (GBA) and the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).

The Austrian Federal Minister of Education, Science and Research Martin Polaschek expects the new institute to be a cutting-edge facility. It will supply the necessary data to effectively combat climate change, secure people's livelihoods and safeguard the foundations of the economy. According to Minister Polaschek, the current challenges include the shortage of natural resources, the prevention of natural disasters and catastrophe management as well as issues relating to a sustainable energy supply, energy storage and groundwater protection.
