A partnership between the clinic and the nearby data centre operated by Interxion is designed to make this possible. Waste heat from Interxion's server rooms, in which prominent streaming providers have located their devices, will become an important part of Floridsdorf Hospital's energy supply. Starting in 2023, 50-70% of the hospital's energy needs will be supplied in this way.
A heat pump whose energy needs will be covered by a wind turbine, amongst other things, will be installed between the two buildings by 2023. In this facility thermal energy will be extracted and the heating water will be tempered for the hospital to a temperature of up to 82 degrees Celsius. The cold water flows back to the data centre, where it will be used for cooling purposes.
The hospital has a heat circulation system featuring a total of 90,000 metres of pipes and an annual consumption of 73,000 cubic metres of hot water. The hospital is heated for 150 days a year. The cooperation with the neighbouring company is expected to enable a reduction of CO₂ emissions by 4,000 tonnes per year. Investments in the project amount to € 3.5 million.
