Only model vehicles capable of navigating the course completely autonomously were allowed to participate. Similar to normal car races, the objective is to avoid crashes and to achieve the best lap time.
Of the 38 teams which entered the competition, several were from the world's most renowned universities in the fields of technology and science, such as Carnegie Mellon University, Rice University and ETH Zurich.
The team representing the Vienna University of Technology, consisting of Daniel Scheuchenstuhl, Dennis Erdogan, Felix Resch, Luigi Berducci, Moritz Christamentl and Stefan Ulmer and working under the supervision of Assistant Professor Andreas Brandstätter and Prof. Radu Grosu, spent weeks preparing for the competition for weeks. The team was actually considered to be one of the favourites. This is due to the fact that the "Scuderia Segfault" won the last two competitions.
