How NGEN is driving Austria’s energy transition

24. November 2025

NGEN Austria is accelerating the expansion of battery storage capacity in Austria. The company operates the country’s two currently largest battery storage facilities and strengthens both grid stability and the integration of electricity generated from renewable sources.

Austria is one of Europe’s pioneers in energy and environmental technologies (Green Tech) and offers a densely networked innovation ecosystem. In 2024, the country ranked third in the EU Eco-Innovation IndexEU Eco-Innovation Index (), placing it among Europe’s Green Innovation Leaders.

A genuine gain for the sector in Austria is NGEN AustriaNGEN Austria (). The subsidiary of Slovenia’s NGEN d.o.o. has been active here since 2021 and is driving forward the roll-out of battery storage solutions. With more than 10,000 installed systems across Europe, revenues of €100 million in 2024, and ambitious plans for the years ahead, NGEN Austria is firmly focused on growth.

A boost for the energy future

NGEN Austria is a full EPC provider: planning, construction and, where requested, operation all come from a single source. The company operates internationally and specialises in the development of battery storage systems, smart energy systems, IT software and energy trading. NGEN currently employs around 40 people in Austria.

Its choice of location was deliberate. The reasons: central position, strong grid infrastructure and a pronounced commitment to sustainability. “This is where technology, openness and implementation strength come together. Austria, Carinthia in particular, as our base for the DACH region, offers the perfect environment for our innovative projects,” says Matija Dolinar, CSO of the NGEN Group.

Energy storage strengthens the grid

“Our storage power plants make the electricity grid more flexible, enhance security of supply and enable even more renewable energy to be fed into the system. We are a turbocharger for the energy transition,” emphasises Matija Dolinar. In 2025, two large storage facilities went into operation in Arnoldstein in Carinthia and in Fürstenfeld in Styria – they are currently the largest in Austria.

The Arnoldstein facility reached an output of 21.9 megawatts (MW) and a capacity of 43.8 megawatt-hours (MWh) after its second expansion stage. The storage system balances short-term fluctuations, provides balancing energy and enhances security of supply across the Alpine–Adriatic region. Unlike pumped-storage plants, the battery installation responds within seconds. Thanks to its integration into the European MARI and PICASSO platforms, it also makes a key contribution to cross-border grid stability. Both platforms pool balancing energy from numerous countries to ensure flexibility is available precisely where it is needed in Europe. The facility in Fürstenfeld, with 24 MWh of capacity and six Tesla Megapack 2XL units, entered operation after a project period of just seven months.
