Investing in Health: Johnson & Johnson Further Expands in Austria
Quick Info

„Austria is a Core Clinical Country for us, making it a priority location for research and development.“
What makes Austria so attractive for companies like Johnson & Johnson?
J&J regards the density of Austria’s healthcare ecosystem as a key advantage, with its highly qualified hospitals, strong professional associations, and engaged patient organizations. Added to this is the combination of a high-performing business environment and excellent quality of life, making Austria attractive for skilled professionals.
J&J benefits from these framework conditions as it continues to expand its presence in the country. The strength of the local team also plays an important role, combining medical expertise, market proximity, and experience in navigating complex healthcare pathways. Equally important is the close cooperation with external partners. In Austria, many relevant stakeholders are easily accessible, allowing professional dialogue to take place quickly and directly.
To preserve these strengths and remain competitive internationally, J&J believes Austria needs a strong life sciences strategy. A change in perspective is crucial: healthcare should not be viewed as a cost factor, but as an investment in the future and in the economy.
How does Johnson & Johnson use Austria’s potential for research and growth?
Austria holds a special position within the global corporation. Since 2023, J&J has expanded its local clinical research team and further increased the number of clinical trials conducted in the country.
The company also relies on partnerships in research. In April 2025, the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Chronic Inflammatory Skin Diseases was opened at the Medical University of Vienna. J&J supports the laboratory together with the Christian Doppler Research Association. Led by Georg Stary from the Department of Dermatology at MedUni Vienna, the research team investigates the molecular mechanisms behind diseases such as psoriasis. The goal is to predict treatment effectiveness and develop new therapeutic approaches. In addition, since 2024 the Austrian Federal Office for Safety in Health Care (BASG) has facilitated the approval of clinical trials conducted exclusively in Austria through an accelerated procedure.
