Quick Info

Who is MSD?

MSD is one of the world’s leading biopharmaceutical companies. In Austria, the company operates three sites in Vienna and Krems and employs around 950 people. Its focus is on the research, development, production and distribution of innovative medicines and vaccines for both humans and animals.

Why does Austria stand out as a location?

Austria offers MSD a stable regulatory environment with a high degree of predictability, as well as fast market access for medicines in the hospital sector once they have been approved – a decisive factor in pharmaceutical research, with its long development cycles. At the same time, Austria stands out for its highly skilled professionals and its central location at the heart of Europe.

What is MSD building in Austria?

MSD is systematically developing its three sites further, combining research, production and international coordination within an integrated network. Vienna is home, on the one hand, to the human health sales organisation, which also coordinates the many clinical trials conducted in Austria. On the other hand, the animal health operation in Vienna produces for the global market. In Krems, a state-of-the-art animal vaccine production operation is being expanded further. In addition, MSD cooperates with the two Austrian biotech companies PROXYGEN and CYPRUMED. There is also an external production partnership for human health products in Vienna.

What role does the Austrian Business Agency (ABA) play?

The Austrian Business Agency supports MSD in particular with attracting international skilled professionals. Through its networks, it helps to attract international skilled professionals to Austria and thereby strengthen the country as a location over the long term.

„Austria is a very important location for MSD. It is above all the combination of highly skilled professionals, a stable regulatory environment and a central location in Europe that enables us to invest in innovation and the development of new therapies over the long term.“

What makes Austria so attractive for companies like MSD?

Austria is one of Europe’s leading life-sciences locations and offers companies a highly innovative environment. It is above all the combination of scientific excellence, regulatory stability and international connectivity that creates ideal conditions for research and development. Particularly in the pharmaceutical industry, with development cycles of up to 13 years, this predictability is a decisive factor in investment decisions. At the same time, companies benefit from highly qualified skilled professionals and an international working environment that facilitates cross-border collaboration.

For globally active companies, the central location is a further key advantage: Austria provides access to markets across Europe and makes it easier to build international production and research networks.

Following the industrial strategy that has already been published, the development of the life sciences strategy is, for MSD, a key factor in maintaining and further enhancing the location’s attractiveness.

How is MSD leveraging Austria’s potential for research and growth?

MSD uses Austria as an integrated life-sciences location in which research, clinical trials and production are closely interlinked. The three sites in Vienna and Krems each take on distinct but complementary roles within the global network.

Austria plays a particularly significant role in clinical research: Each year, MSD conducts around 50 trials at roughly 80 centres, making it one of the most active players in Europe. At the same time, with an R&D intensity of around 25%, MSD is among the most research-intensive pharmaceutical locations in the country. Production, too, is being expanded continuously: In Vienna, animal health medicines are manufactured for more than 150 markets worldwide, while in Krems a state-of-the-art animal vaccine production operation is being expanded to help strengthen resilient supply chains.

Good to know!

50 clinical trials per year

Relative to its population, this makes Austria one of MSD’s most active clinical research locations in Europe.

Up to 350 jobs in Krems

MSD is building one of Europe’s most advanced animal vaccine production facilities at the site.
