Würth Austria invests more than five million euros in geothermal project
24. November 2025At its Austrian site in Böheimkirchen, Lower Austria, Würth aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by 90 percent by 2030. A central pillar in achieving this target is a geothermal plant that has replaced the gas-fired system from the current heating season onwards. During the project, Würth received advisory support from the ABA and financial assistance from federal funding schemes.
“Raus aus Gas” (“out of gas”) is part of WürthWürth () Austria’s long-term sustainability strategy, which encompasses a wide range of decarbonisation measures. Since the commissioning of the geothermal plant at the Böheimkirchen site, the location has become almost completely independent of natural gas.
“The geothermal plant is a central component of our CO₂ reduction plan. Based on 2021 levels, our aim is to reduce direct emissions and indirect emissions from energy consumption by more than 90 percent by 2030,” explains Michael Hempt, Managing Director of Würth Austria.
The project represents an investment of around €5.9 million, of which approximately €500,000 is covered by federal funding. “Close cooperation with the ABA was extremely valuable for us. The expert guidance and support throughout the entire funding process made a significant contribution to ensuring that we could implement our geothermal project efficiently and successfully,” Hempt adds.
The geothermal installation reduces CO₂ emissions by around 300 tonnes per year—equivalent to roughly ten percent of the company’s current carbon footprint. In addition, electricity generated at weekends by the rooftop photovoltaic systems is fed directly into the heat pumps. This strengthens self-sufficiency and reduces dependence on external energy sources.
