The Viennese aeronautics company RUAG Space developed and built an electronic unit for the satellite, namely a so-called Pyro-Release Unit. Shortly after reaching the designated satellite orbit, this device controls the opening of mechanical safeguards and fixing elements of the satellite propulsion system as well as the main instruments by igniting small explosive charges. The company already supplied this electronic unit for three previous Meteosat satellites of the second generation.
In addition, the thermal insulation material of the company protects the sensitive systems against extreme temperature differences in space. RUAP Space also supplied electrical and mechanical ground and test equipment.
RUAG Space is also participating in the third generation of Meteosat satellites currently under development. The first of a total of six planned satellites should be ready for launching starting in 2019.
