New CD laboratory focuses on the fight against fungal infections

Every 14th patient in European hospitals comes down with an infection, representing a total of four million people each year. In addition to bacteria and viruses, fungi are the most important pathogens, with a distinction made between yeast fungus and mold fungus.

"For some time now we have been witnessing an increase of mucormycosis which are caused by Mucorales mold fungus“, said Cornelia Lass-Flörl, Director of the Section for  Hygiene and Medical Microbiology at the Medical University of Innsbruck.

The fungi enter the lungs through inhalation and from there can reach other organs via the circulatory system. In the Christian Doppler Laboratory, the scientists aim to understand the pathogenesis of these infections. Moreover, the laboratory will work on diagnosis and therapeutic approaches as well as on various preventive measures to prevent the spread of these fungal infections in collaboration with the industrial partners of the Christian Doppler Laboratory, namely Fritz Egger GmbH in Sankt Johann in Tyrol and the pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences.

About 75 percent of the cases of extremely aggressive ovarian cancer (ovarian carcinoma) originally arise in the fallopian tube. Currently there are no possibilities to detect this at an early stage. A new catheter system developed by Viennese scientists could represent a new possibility to deal with this.
