Digital Health in Austria: a fertile ground for innovation and growth
09. February 2026International companies and investors value Austria as a hub for digital health and life sciences – thanks to a nationwide digital health infrastructure, excellent research and successful scaleups with a global outlook.
With ELGA, Austria has a nationwide electronic health record system covering around 97% of the population. On this basis, several digital health applications have already been successfully integrated into everyday healthcare practice, including the electronic vaccination record, the nationwide health advice service 1450, and telemedicine and telementoring services.
This robust digital infrastructure creates an environment in which innovative digital health solutions can be developed, scaled up and rolled out internationally.
Digital health pioneers from Austria
Austria is one of the early pioneers of digital health solutions. This is where international success stories begin: Runtastic, now established worldwide as Adidas Running, was founded in Austria. mySugr, one of the world’s best-known digital diabetes management tools, was also developed in Austria and was later acquired by the Roche Group.
These pioneers have demonstrated that digital health ‘made in Austria’ can be scaled up internationally – and have laid the foundations for a sustainable ecosystem.
Building on this foundation, a new generation of Austrian digital health scaleups is now emerging, targeting international markets and working closely with healthcare systems and research institutions:
XUND (Vienna): AI-powered symptom analysis and digital patient navigation for insurance companies and healthcare providers.
myBioma: Scientifically sound microbiome analyses with a focus on prevention and personalised medicine.
This creates a mature innovation ecosystem for international partners, offering access to expertise, talent and real-world applications.
International expansion: nyra health, Medicus.ai and Symptoma
A recent example of the location’s appeal is nyra health from Vienna. The digital health startup secured a Series A funding round worth €20 millionSeries A funding round worth €20 million () in 2026, attracting international investors in the process. nyra health develops AI-based solutions for neurological rehabilitation and connects patients and clinical staff via a digital platform that is already integrated into standard care. From its base in Austria, the company is driving forward its international expansion, the development of its AI technology and new research partnerships.
In addition to domestic companies, international digital health and AI firms are also deliberately choosing Austria as a research and development hub. Examples such as Medicus.ai Medicus.ai ()show that international startups benefit here from clinical expertise, highly qualified specialists and proximity to research institutions. Austria often serves as a test and innovation market for Europe.
Symptoma Symptoma ()is another international health tech company that has chosen to set up in Austria. The company is bringing AI-based assistance systems directly into clinical practice – including at St. Johann in Tyrol District Hospital, where a flagship project for AI-supported outpatient care is being implemented. The solution supports healthcare staff with patient admission, clinical decision-making and administrative tasks. One particular Europe-wide milestone attracted a great deal of attention: AI-powered, automated discharge letters that reduce the administrative burden and significantly speed up hospital processes.
Future technologies and security
Austria is also investing in the security of digital health and research data. A current use case is the quantum-secure storage of sensitive pathogen data at MedUni Graz within the context of quantum communication – an increasingly important factor, particularly in the case of pathogens with dual-use potential.
An integrated ecosystem for digital health and life sciences
International companies benefit from a comprehensive range of business location services in Austria: excellent research institutions, a digitally advanced healthcare system, targeted funding programmes, as well as international networks and opportunities for collaboration.
