Extensive expertise and excellent international network

October 2025The active crypto/blockchain community in Austria demonstrates how research, business and networks can work closely together, using Vienna as an international stage and working towards the common goal of establishing Austria as a European crypto hub. Events such as the annual “Vienna Blockchain Week” play a significant role in this.
Over 230 blockchain companies and more than 130 companies and institutions with R&D activities are active in Austria. We would like to highlight some of them.
The Austrian Blockchain Centre (ABC)Austrian Blockchain Centre (ABC) () is the leading research centre for blockchain and distributed ledger technologies in Austria. Founded by five universities, ABC brings together expertise from the fields of technology, economics and law and connects universities, companies and public authorities in order to develop practical solutions and transfer them to the business world. ABC supports companies from brainstorming to prototype development and organises the annual Austrian Blockchain Conference, which brings international experts to Vienna.
In addition, the Research Institute for CryptoeconomicsResearch Institute for Cryptoeconomics () at the Vienna University of Economics and Business analyses economic and regulatory aspects, while the BlockchainSci-Lab at the University of ViennaBlockchainSci-Lab at the University of Vienna () examines technical fundamentals and security aspects.
In addition, networks such as AUSTRIAPRO and Bitcoin AustriaBitcoin Austria (), the Blockchain Initiative Austria and the oenpay Financial Innovation Huboenpay Financial Innovation Hub () promote the use of digital technologies. The Digital Assets Association Austria (DAAA)Digital Assets Association Austria (DAAA) () has over 40 members – including Bitpanda, Bybit, KuCoin, Erste Group and Raiffeisen Bank International – and promotes dialogue between the industry and regulators.
The Digital Assets Association Austria (DAAA)Digital Assets Association Austria (DAAA) () is the central network for blockchain innovations and digital assets. With over 40 institutional members, the DAAA promotes innovation, smart regulation and dialogue with authorities. The new board of directors led by Paul Pöltner and Walter Mösenbacher is pursuing the goal of establishing Vienna as a European crypto hub.
DLT Austria organises the Vienna Blockchain WeekVienna Blockchain Week (), which will take place for the second time in 2025. The event brings international speakers, companies and innovators to Vienna and focuses on compliance, energy, tokenisation and institutional investments. Partners include Bybit EU, Blockpit, Bitpanda, KuCoin EU and numerous international organisations. Vienna Blockchain Week showcases the innovative strength of the city and promotes exchange between business, science and politics.
Austrian start-ups and scale-ups in the spotlight
Many start-ups and scale-ups also benefit from the attractive location: including crypto tax reporting provider Blockpit, broker CoinfinityCoinfinity (), Bitcoin ATM operator KurantKurant (), digital asset trading infrastructure provider autowhaleautowhale (), Atlas Technologies with its blockchain infrastructure, the OwnerChip platform and the broker app 21bitcoin21bitcoin ().
The Linz scale-up BlockpitBlockpit () is Europe's pioneer in crypto tax and compliance software. In 2025, Blockpit was awarded the EY Scale-Up Award and secured a million-euro investment from Elevator Ventures, the venture capital arm of Raiffeisen Bank International. Blockpit offers a platform that automates tax reporting for individuals, businesses and tax advisors, thereby bridging the gap between traditional finance and the digital asset world.
The Viennese start-up OwnerChipOwnerChip () transforms physical products into digital assets. With NFC stickers and blockchain certificates, manufacturers and retailers can document the authenticity, origin and history of luxury goods, works of art or collectibles in a tamper-proof manner. OwnerChip has received multiple international awards in 2025 and is regularly present at industry events.
