Lam Research Continues to Grow in Austria
03. March 2025Lam Research is a global supplier of innovative wafer fabrication equipment and services to the semiconductor industry. Lam's equipment and services allow customers to build smaller and better performing devices. Its facility in Villach, established in 1992, has a staff of 800 employees and has been enlarged several times. It serves as the global centre for the development and production of Spin Clean products used in semiconductor manufacturing. Lam Research counts on the support of ABA, both in terms of expanding the existing site as well as recruiting highly qualified skilled workers.
Featuring a strong network of companies covering the entire value chain for microelectronics, Austria plays a key role in driving the future of this technology. In 2008, Lam Research, a globally leading supplier of cleaning systems for worldwide semiconductor production with headquarters in the USA acquired the Austrian firm SEZ, founded in 1986. “Bad Bleiberg was our place of birth, but we matured and grew up in Villach,” states Walter Lerch, Site Leader Villach, Lam Research. Accordingly, what is now Lam Research AG in Austria has been operating in Villach for more than 30 years.
The Austrian facility with a workforce of 800 employees from about 30 nations serves as the global competence centre for the development and production of Spin Clean products used in semiconductor manufacturing. In recognition of its contributions to the local community and its pivotal role in advancing technological innovation, the company received the prestigious Coat of Arms from the city of Villach in 2024.
“Austria offers an excellent infrastructure, well-trained skilled workers and a stable environment. These factors enable us to continuously develop innovative technologies and increase our production capacities,” Walter Lerch adds.
In Villach, the company focuses on the research and development of new wafer cleaning technologies as well as the optimisation of existing processes in order to enhance the efficiency and quality of semiconductor production. The team in Villach works closely with international partners to ensure that the latest technological advances are integrated into the production process.
Lam Research has expanded its business operations and achieved an increase in production since 2016. In the meantime, the facility ceremoniously opened a new production and logistics center in the summer of 2024, commemorating its 17th extension project.
In addition to its site in Villach, Lam Research also acquired Semsysco GmbH in Salzburg, which is now also a 100% Lam Research subsidiary. Lam now adds capabilities in advanced packaging, ideal for leading-edge logic chips and chiplet-based solutions for high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence (AI) and other data-intensive applications.
“ABA provides substantial support to us in expanding our existing site, gives us valuable contacts to local authorities and partners and helps us in attracting highly qualified employees,” Mr. Lerch concludes.
