Sought-after business location despite the difficult environment

03. March 2025

Once again, Austria has proven itself to be a top-notch place to be for business location and expansion projects. In this regard, the Austrian Business Agency (ABA) is playing a central role and supported international companies which invested more than € 1 billion in Austria in the previous year.

The business area INVEST in AUSTRIA of the Austrian Business Agency is the central point of contact for business location and expansion projects in Austria. For the fifth time in ABA’s more than 40-year history, the investment volume of the 309 international companies supported by ABA surpassed the threshold of € 1 billion. More than 2,000 new jobs are being created within the context of these projects. The ABA came into contact with 1,323 companies for the first time. Moreover, the business location agency provided aftercare consultations to support 158 firms already established in the country to help ensure their long-term success.

“These figures underline the importance of Austria as a stable and future-oriented business location, also in geopolitically and economically challenging times,” explains ABA Managing Director René Tritscher.

Projects with a high level of value creation for Austria account for about 22% of the business location ventures, a further increase compared to 2023. The focus is on future-oriented industries such as information and communications technology (ICT) which once again took the top spot with a total of 66 projects. This sector particularly benefits from the well-trained, skilled employees, Austria’s advanced infrastructure and funding for innovation.

The growth areas of life sciences (21 projects) as well as energy and environmental technology (17) sustainability make an impact on the innovation landscape. For example, the pharmaceutical company Novartis is investing a three-digit million euro sum in its existing facilities in Tyrol. Electra headquartered in France is expanding to Austria and aims to set up more than 600 fast-charging points for electric-powered vehicles. Lam Research further expanded its facility in Villach and ceremoniously commemorated its 17th extension project by opening a new production and logistics centre. These projects demonstrate that Austria offers optimal conditions for visionary companies.

CAE, a globally leader provider of aviation trainings headquartered in Canada announced in 2024 that it will make massive investments in its new training centre with simulators for pilots. "Vienna is a key hub in Central Europe that complements well our business aviation training network," says Alexandre Prévost, CAE’s Division President - Business Aviation. "With its strategic location and vibrant aviation environment, Vienna offers pilots a unique opportunity to enhance their skills, making CAE Vienna a top training destination. The Austrian Business Agency has been a valuable partner, offering support and local insights as we establish ourselves in the region."

Research and development for growth

With a research intensity (ratio of research and development to GDP) of over 3%, Austria ranks among the top performers in Europe. International startups and R&D projects benefit from a unique combination of the research premium, excellent research facilities and highly qualified skilled workers. Austria once again attracted numerous innovation-driven companies, as reflected by 40 international startups and 35 research and development projects.

Austria’s strategic geographical location in the heart of Europe is another competitive advantage. Austria serves as a logistics hub for companies aiming to tap into European and global markets thanks to one of the best road and railway networks in the world as well as access to important harbours. The business location projects originated primarily in Europe, North America and East Asia. “This diversity strengthens Austria’s position as a globally networked business location. Companies from all around the world have confidence in Austria’s stable conditions and innovative strength,” says ABA Managing Director René Tritscher.
